There are some things that should never be kept in a storage unit, whether for safety reasons or for the sake of health and hygiene. Here is a guide to what not to store:

Food

When you store food items for any length of time, you are bound to attract vermin, particularly if the food is not stored securely. And once they arrive, vermin such as rats, mice, ants and cockroaches can go on to cause a lot of damage to all sorts of other stored items, both in yours and nearby units. For this reason, no food of any kind should be stored in your unit and this includes items like dried flowers and bags of wheat and other grains.

Dangerous items

For your own and everyone else’s safety, dangerous goods are not permitted to be stored in units. Dangerous goods are any items or substances that are combustible, flammable, toxic or hazardous in any way. These include things like paint, petrol, corrosives, cleaners, compressed gases, fertilisers, asbestos, fireworks, explosives, weapons and ammunition. If you’re unsure about whether an item you plan to store is dangerous, you should ask at the office before storing it.

Plants and animals

Whether alive or dead, these should not be stored in a storage unit. Even if they are dead, such as stuffed animals or dried flowers, these can still deteriorate over time, eventually causing bad odours and attracting vermin.

Delicate items

While a storage unit is a secure place to keep your valuables, it is not always climate controlled and goods can be exposed to extremes of temperature and to other unfavourable climatic conditions. For this reason, delicate items that are easily damaged such as photographs, valuable books and electronics should probably not be kept in a storage unit, unless they are well sealed to protect them from the elements.

Items that leak

You should also refrain from storing items that have leaks or have the potential to cause damage to a storage unit in any way, as the cost of such damage would be passed onto you at the end of your rental term. Leaks can also cause damage to adjoining units, which could lead to legal claims being brought against you.

Illegal items

It goes without saying that stolen items or those of an illegal nature are not welcome in storage units. While we make every effort to keep your valuables secure and to protect your privacy, we would ask that you keep it legal at all times.
