Mould Free Fridge Storage
When storing a fridge one of the greatest concerns is mould. If the fridge is not thoroughly cleaned and dried before being stored it will be in such a state when removed that it can no longer be used.
Below is four steps to help ensure your fridge is in working order while stored:
1. Leave plenty of time for defrosting.
Before you clean your fridge, remove all food and unplug it. To ensure that it’s completely dry, you should defrost the fridge for a week before you transport the fridge into storage.
2. Clean Your Fridge Properly
Mould can be caused by food debris and can spread throughout your fridge. It can also occur in a clean fridge due to moisture, however it is more likely to occur if the fridge has not been cleaned properly.
Ensure thorough cleaning before storage so that even the smallest amount of food is removed as this can attract pests, such as mice or ants. Not only are they unhygienic, but they can cause irreparable damage to the electric components or cords.
Clean any drawers, shelves or other removable parts with warm, mildly soapy water – ensuring you remove all food debris.
Expert Tip: We recommend a mixture of baking soda and water to clean out refrigerator and freezer. Do not use ammonia or chlorine bleach, they can cause cracks or discolouration, leaving strong odours.
3. Keep It Upright
Moving a fridge can cause compressor issues, so when moving and storing keep it upright to minimise tipping. Never lay on it’s side and let it sit for at least 48 hours before turning it on again.
4. Keep It Dry
After cleaning, defrosting and carefully moving, ensure your fridge is completely dry before storing it, otherwise mould and mildew will form and you’ll either get a lingering or offensive smell that can spoil your food.
The best way to avoid this is to completely remove the doors on both the refrigerator and freezer compartments, or leave each door ajar by wedging an object in between the door and the compartment frame.
A deodoriser can be placed inside to maintain freshness.
Expert Tip: We recommend mixing a teaspoon of vanilla essence with a cup of warm water and give a quick wipe out, This will help to ensure you have a clean, odour free, ready to use fridge.
